Public Narrative: Story Telling to Move Others to Action (March 29, DC)

Thu, March 29, 2012 - Fri, March 30, 2012

Crafting a narrative that motivates people to action is one of the most important aspects of any campaign or advocacy work.

It's also one of the most challenging. Year after year, we see great ventures fall short because the narrative they told never connected with their audience. We want to help you develop the skills to build a compelling narrative for your work through a training in the art and science of storytelling.

Public Narrative is a system of crafting and telling your story, developed by Marshall Ganz and honed over years in the field. It's the values-based practice of storytelling used in successful organizing campaigns from Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers to Barack Obama's campaigns, and many others.

What will I learn?

In this 2-day workshop, you will learn new framework to change your approach from messaging to value-based storytelling & time to practice these new skills . We will dive deeper into the following topics:

  • Why public narrative (i.e. the story of self, us and now) is an essential leadership skill
  • How to tell your story and coach others in telling their story
  • How to utilize your story on a variety of platforms, including including 1-1 meetings, in call scripts, while crafting a stump speech, developing an online narrative, pitching your story to traditional media and creating powerful video and multimedia content.

Who should come:

The skill of value-based storytelling requires continued attention and development, and therefore this workshop is applicable to organizers at many levels.

What is the format:

  • 35% Lectures from public narrative and storytelling experts
  • 50% Small group work and applied learning sessions
